Advancing science through research, regulation and education, the Cruelty Free International Trust is currently supporting the work of scientists and innovators to drive the transition towards a future of research and testing without the use of animals.
The grants that we provide are supporting a range of exciting projects all of which are driving change towards a future free from animal tests. The Trust prioritises projects designed to support scientific progress, uphold existing laws to protect animals, and educate and raise awareness of the issues surrounding animal testing. The current project areas we are funding demonstrate that breadth of vision.
Promoting the development and application of non-animal test methods
Providing technical and regulatory expertise, the team of scientists we are funding is supporting the development and acceptance of non-animal methods by regulatory bodies such as the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) and the ICH (International Conference on Harmonisation). Providing expertise to these critical global bodies supports the creation or revision of guidelines which promote the widest use of non-animal tests.
Supporting the principle of animal testing as a last resort and raising awareness of the benefits of non-animal approaches, our support is driving greater progress towards non-animal methods globally.
Driving change in toxicity testing through effective regulation in the European Union
In the European Union, regulatory testing is required by law for chemical substances sold into the European market. Generating the information required still relies upon a wide range of animal tests and the path to acceptance of progressive non-animal methods can be very challenging.
Our funding is enabling a team of scientists and organisations across the European Union to engage with EU bodies to ensure that suitable non-animal methods are developed and used to the maximum extent. As one example, our support enables experts to engage with the European Chemicals Agency to provide technical input to avoid animal testing for chemicals, a growing area of concern.
Ensuring the debate around animal testing is informed by effective research and education
Effective research and information are critical if the debate around animal testing is to be well informed. Our support is funding original research in a range of areas related to animal research and humane non-animal alternatives.
Building upon a history of support for research and analysis, the Trust is funding a range of scientific papers which are currently in development. Keen to ensure real world impact, the work the Trust is funding will provide information and insight of immediate use to regulators, companies and governments keen to develop a path away from animal tests.
